One of the challenges of menopause is the realisation that you can't get away with eating the same foods you used to. Your body has changed, and you need to learn to eat for this new way of being

Why?

The drop in oestrogen levels that occurs during menopause has a side effect of redistributing body fat and excess pounds start to settle around the waist. On top of that, the change that happens in relation to oestrogen and progesterone at this stage of life is also likely to make your body less sensitive to insulin, the fat-storage hormone. This is produced in response to you eating carbohydrates.

When the body’s cells are less sensitive to insulin, more insulin is needed to do the same job, and more insulin produced means more fat stored. There are also lifestyle factors to consider. Muscle mass diminishes with age while fat increases.

That means it’s more important than ever to switch from whatever kind of diet you’re on now to a low GL (glycaemic load) diet that balances your blood sugar levels. This means you will be eating foods that do not trigger insulin secretion in response to what you eat.

It may seem preposterous to say that diet influences how we feel; but think about it: In the cold, hard light of science, feelings are chemistry!

Sleep really is a game-changer for your health and for your emotional well-being but even so, scientists are only just starting to begin to understand the biological role.

Here are my 5 top tips for better sleep…

1 – PREPARE FOR SLEEP DURING THE DAY

Try to take some kind of exercise every day. This includes stretching and aerobic exercise. A brisk walk ticks both boxes. Caffeine has a very long half-life, and it can take 6-8 hours for half the caffeine in your cuppa to leave your body. Consider that any caffeine after 2pm (if you go to bed at 10pm) will have a detrimental effect on the quality of your sleep – even if you cannot feel it.

2 - TAKE TIME TO WIND DOWN

Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine is really important and this is where the Nourish + Flourish Sleep Box is going to make this easy for you. A warm bath with calming bath salts, scented candles, and some light reading and then pop on your sleep mask, and it’s lights out. You might also find it helpful to practise relaxation techniques like yoga, guided meditation or reflective journalling with your lovely new 6-month health & well-being journal!

Creating a comfortable sleep environment helps promote better sleep. This includes keeping the bedroom dark, quiet, and cool, and using comfortable bedding and pillows. Consider getting a traditional alarm clock so your smartphone can stay out of the bedroom – this will also help remove temptations to check messages and/or social media.

Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help regulate the circadian rhythm. Avoid staying up late on weekends or sleeping in too much on days off.

This is known as ‘adrenal dysregulation’ or ‘HPA axis dysfunction’. The latter stands for hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction, the current term for what we used to refer to as ‘adrenal fatigue’.
